Dont take shortcuts - A PSA....

Post by backyard brewer »

"I'd been meaning to...."

Famous last words. Well, I'd been meaning to... build my whirlpool return for my boil kettle for chilling. But since I haven't done it yet, I've just been tucking the hose from the pump outlet back over the side of the kettle and down to the bottom where it's made a nice little whirlpool and the weight of the QD has held it in place.... Until yesterday.....

I had the pump running to sanitize it when the alarm went off and it was time for flame out and the final hops. As I removed the lid for the final hop addition, the hose popped out of the kettle and sprayed me with boiling wort. Good times....

It sprayed my right arm down my leg and then lodged in the open cuff of my shoe for just a split second while I jumped about what seemed like 10 feet in the air. The shoe full of hot wort was particularly nice.

Overall I got VERY lucky since I didn't get hit in the face and the burn on my arm and leg are not much worse than a good sunburn. The burn on my foot/ankle is a 3rd degree blistered mess about 2 inches square.

All because "I'd been meaning too". Before I brew again, my whirlpool and vorlauf/sparge returns will have permanent fittings for attachment. No more shortcuts.

Glad to hear you weren't injured more than a few burns. If we only had that on video! Purely for educational purposes.

Ouch, I hope it heals quickly.

Reminds me of the time that my sister asked me to fill her radiator up because her car was overheating. Being 13, I wasn't all too aware of the effect of pressure on hot liquid. Wearing a baseball cap all summer wasn't much fun.

Sorry to hear it Derrin, that seriously blows. Brewing burns are the absolute worst (speaking from experience)....

Well, other than the pint or so that ended up in my shoe, it's fermenting nicely.

You need to take a picture of that blister and post it.

Damn, that really sucks., I bet you'll be kicking yourself if the beer turns out really awesome and you start wishing you had just one more pint.

Seriously though, glad to hear you're ok, like you said it could have been much worse. I'm counting my lucky stars I left when I did though  Knowing my inquisitive nature I would have been peeking over the lid to watch you when you did that, and... Image

Yikes... At least it's somewhere non-visible for most situations... I still have a mark on my hand from a boilover of a starter...

Hope you recover soon... I'm sure it hurts like hell.
