Post by dhempy »

Has anyone been to Munich / Salzburg and have any beer related places to recommend for the informed traveler?

Thanks.

Look for a place with outdoor seating and lots of people, All of the places I visited had great beer especially in the rural areas. So order a stein or two and enjoy...call a cab...go to another place and order another stein or two...continue as needed thru vacation

What part of Germany?

If you lik Pilsen stay in the north. For other styles travel south and find a beer garden.

In Salzburg, I recommend the Augustiner brewery/monastery. http://www.augustinerbier.at/index.php? ... stiner&L=1 They have a great beer garden and some good food. It's right in the heart of the old city. I had a great time there.

In Munich, I would highly recommend Hofbrauhaus. http://www.hofbraeuhaus.de/en/index_en.html Admittedly, it's super touristy but it's also packed with fun-loving Bavarians. By the end of the night on my visit, a young German man (in full Bavarian regalia) had bought us a round and was teaching us all the songs. You have to fight for a table so get there early and be prepared to be aggressive. Also, Munich has a number of large parks, I think they all have beer gardens. I went to the lake beer garden at the Englischer Garten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Englischer_Garten), it was a wonderful place. You could easily spend an entire afternoon drinking and grazing on the local fare.

The beer is traditional and will not be anything mind blowing, but it's good and the atmosphere cannot be beat.
