Wood Chips in beer

Post by slothfacekilla »

Im looking to add wood chips when I rack my wort for the second time. Is there any special sanitation steps that I should look into like boiling the wood chips or oven baking them? Also, These were wood chips that were used at my work for another batch.... so is it still good to use, even months later??

Thanks,

Cesar

Steaming them in a vegetable steamer for 10-15 minutes is a good way to sanitize while not extracting any flavors. Like the Cap'n said, I'm not sure how much extra oak character you will pull out of previously used chips though. Certainly worth a shot I guess.

Sure, just follow sound sanitation practices like Kevin said above.
