Do You Own A Grain Mill?

Post by BARL Brewing »

I am looking at purchasing a grain mill and wanted to get some recommendations and feedback on what to consider.
I will be sharing it with my brother in law and between us (mostly him) it will be going thru 2-4 batches per month, so it will be getting a lot of use. What say you?

I am happy with the 3 roller Crank and Stein mill I have. If I had it to do over I would have went with the 1/2" drive instead of 3/8". 1/2" is the standard for sheaves and more rigid the the 3/8".

I have the fixed roller JSP Maltmill and I'm very happy with it.

I have a two roller Crank and Stein (no longer in business) that I am really happy with and I have been using it trouble free for nearly 150 batches now. One of the original Crank and Stein guys now runs Monster Brewing Hardware and they have some great looking mills. The one I have is similar to their MM-2.

I'm using the standard Barley Crusher, and it's worked just fine for everything I've needed so far.

+1. I have the 1/2" shafts. Crank and Stein is no longer around, but the guy who was the brains of it, Fred, now owns Monster Mills. http://www.monsterbrewinghardware.com/p ... _main.html

I get a very consistent crush from the 3-roller mill and I would buy it again.

Ditto what Derrin says. I have the 3 roller MM and it works great. For approx 20+ lbs of grain in a 10 gallon batch, it takes 5 minutes to mill. I bought their hopper and mounted the mill to a bucket lid and mill into a 6 gal bucket.

I use the Barley Crusher "at home" as well as the shop. Works well for me.

A more consistant crush and you can run the mill faster without worrying about shredding vs. crushing the grain.

I'd never seen one and so was having a hard time picturing how it worked until I found this page.

Danagri Website wrote:With only 2 rollers fitted, the larger ingredients can become isolated on the rollers, rotating with them and remaining uncrushed. This prevents other ingredients from being able to pass through the rollers and therefore reducing speed and capacity. The third roller, set away a little more than the others and fully adjustable, catches the larger ingredients and pre-crushes them, thereby helping to maintain a fast processing time and ensuring the machine works at its optimum efficiency.
