White Labs PurePitch yeast

Postby BrewMasterBrad on Mon Oct 10, 2016 1:37 pm

I bought two pouches of WLP001 and I am getting ready to make a starter. I haven't used the new White Labs packages yet and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks for opening and emptying the package.

They're kind of a pain in my opinion.

I try to make sure to get everything in suspension before opening up the pouch, spray outside with starsan, and then cut the top off.

The pack is double bagged so it is hard to squeeze all the yeast out if you have it all settled on the bottom.

I've only used them 1 time, but preferred them over the vials. The vials always ended up with pressure and sprayed too much while opening.

I just warm the pouches up as normal, sanitize the ends and give them a gentle squeeze or two to suspend everything, then cut the top with shears, and poor into my stirplate flask. You can squeeze the tube from the bottom up like an empty toothpaste tube to get the last bit of sediment out as well.
