This is a homebrewing gone wrong story!

Post by backyard brewer »

When a 61-year-old man with a blood alcohol level of 0.37 percent told emergency room workers in Texas that he hadn't had a drink all day, they were skeptical. However, Dr. Barbara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College, Texas, and Dr. Justin McCarthy, a gastroenterologist, investigated the man's case. They found that, even when he was isolated in a hospital room for 24 hours on a controlled diet, at one point his blood alcohol level still rose to 0.12 percent.

It turned out the home-brewer had an overabundance of brewer's yeast in his gut, which, according to McCarthy and Cordell, was fermenting sugars in his diet — from foods such as a bagel or a soda — into ethanol. The doctors reported it as a case of "auto-brewery syndrome." Experts say further study into the rare syndrome is needed, but it doesn't actually sound like much fun. "[The man] would get drunk out of the blue — on a Sunday morning after being at church, or really, just anytime," Dr. Cordell told NPR. "His wife was so dismayed about it that she even bought a Breathalyzer."

Its true. Here is the case study with some more detail on the science behind it.

Fascinating!
